Utopian and distopian works

Brave New World

Not many people know that Aldous Huxley died the day Kennedy was killed in Texas. (quite irrelevant really, but a little interesting?)

This work must surely be regarded as his masterpiece. Very well written, will capture your imagination. But then you've probably already read it.... If not, click on the photo to be whisked to Amazon to buy it (£5.59)

Atlas Shrugged

Exactly what the South Park creators have against this book I know not; admittedly it is rather an, um, lengthy novel, but let that not dispel you (value for money...?). It is fantastic.

Written by a Russian émigré, this book slams socialism. Hard. If you worship the almighty buck, this will be right up your alley. £5.59

Catch-22

We all know what a Catch-22 situation is. But do you know (and not because I told you) what the original example is? Wouldn't that be a great talking point at parties, or in night clubs??

Reading the book, which is possibly The Great American Novel, for pleasure rather than a few one liners or party tales is a more noble attitude. Again, this is a great read (and his style of using (lots) of brackets through the text is (as well as being (really) unusual as well) infectious.) About £6

On The Road Having read this book on a Greyhound from New York to Toronto, perhaps I was taken away by romantic notions and the "connection" due to the circumstances. But I cannot see anyone not enjoying this novel. You move through the pages like you're moving to a continuos beat. Considering how it was written, it is understandable.

The shortest of the novels pictured, and very easy to read. Warning: This book may make you want to quit your job and travel the world. Which might be a good thing..? And under £5. Inner peace at bargain prices.

"The Ground Beneath Her Feet" Salman Rushdie
This is a truly amazing book. Less fantasy (and controversial) than the Satanic Verses, this book charts the lives and deaths, of three people. It's the story of the Beatles, Elvis, the Stones etc. It's a tour of the middle of the century. Hey. It's Rock and Roll, but not as we know it.
